Have you ever had a bowl “Yentafo”? If you haven’t, I definitely recommend that you give it a try. Yentafo is basically a noodle soup with fish balls, squids, veggies, fried wontons, and red bean paste, giving it its signature red broth.
This noodle dish can be found in many noodle shops, restaurants, and roadside stalls throughout Bangkok. However, the tastiest Yentafo that I’ve stumbled upon is located in the Silom area. If you’re adventurous and love noodles like me, then head on to this roadside stall in the back alley of Silom Complex (AKA Central Plaza). I’m not sure if it has a name, but it’s right across the street from the “Bangkok Christian Guess House”. You’re at the right place if you see this man right here, I call him “Sergeant Yentafo”. He’s the waiter/server/cashier, and let me tell you something, this guy didn’t graduate from any hospitality school. He’s a no-nonsense sort of guy that will tell you to go to hell if you ask for wontons or Phad Thai (this is one of the sign that a place has good food, a drill sergeant like waiter and the place is packed).
Their specialty is nothing else but Yentafo, and all you have to tell when ordering is what type of noodle you like and whether you want it “wet” or “dry”, meaning with or without the broth. The place is always packed during lunch time and you’ll have to wait across the street in front of the Bangkok Christian Guess House for a table. The “Sergeant” will promptly come over and take your order, and you better make sure you order enough to eat, as re-ordering will piss him off!, as there are other people waiting for tables. I recommend that you order at least 2 bowls, as one definitely won’t fill you up.
Once you get your Yentafo, just eat and enjoy, don’t you dare sit around and chitchat! You’ll know exactly why people come back for more after the first taste, it’s simply delicious!
I think one of the best ways to know a country is through its foods, and some of the best foods in Thailand are in fact served at roadside stalls like this one. So if you want a true Thai Xperience, then head on to Silom for some roadside Yentafo!
Since “Sergeant Yentafo” doesn’t speak English, I’ve listed the menu below for you in Thai. Feel free to copy & paste it for printing. You can just hand it to the “Sergeant”. |
