ON THE SIDEWALKS OF BANGKOK

Why is that asshole riding his motorcycle on the sidewalk?   An often asked question by newcomers to the Kingdom’s bustling capitol.  Before unleashing a verbal barrage or giving him the bird, take note of the following.

  • First, postal delivery is by motorcycle throughout the city, usually door-to-door on the sidewalks, so you’ll be taking on the government if you complain.

  • Second, the cops all ride motorcycles, frequently on the sidewalks so complaining to them will more likely get you a ticket than the bike riding perpetrator.

  • Finally, those nicely paved ramps cut into the curbs at the end of each block aren’t there out of compassion for the wheelchair bound but so motorcycles and vendor pushcarts can access the sidewalks with ease.

A much repeated barometer for measuring your tenure in Bangkok is, “ …you know you’ve been here a long time when you casually move aside for a motorcycle without wanting to clobber the bastard for not riding in the street.”  These are certainly not the sidewalks of New York or the footpaths of London.
